Friday August 13 Dominican Republic

Good Evening!
The last two days have been absolutely wonderful in the DR! On Thursday, we broke into two teams before and after lunch, sending one team into the community to paint faces, do bible stories, play games, and teach them songs while the other team went to finish the projects at the school. What a joy and a blessing it was to do what we did! This was one experience that you walk away from having learned much more about the love of Christ than what you taught to the children. Both morning and afternoon, we had to turn kids away because of the lack of space where we were working. It was heart-breaking to do, but it was a reminder of both God's call for us to reach the world for Christ and His sovereignty in doing so! There are so many opportunities out there. Although we could not reach everyone, we prayed for those that we could not reach that the team coming next week would pick up where we left off.

Today, we went to see another part of the country that is more prominent financially than Los Alcarriozos. We went to Santo Domingo, where we stopped by a market and did a little bargain shopping. Afterwards, we toured the oldest cathedral in the Western Hemisphere, as well as much of the "Old City". It was beautiful! We finished our time there with a delicious lunch and some time at the beach. When we got back, we ate another great dinner and had some time where we talked about our week and all that God did among us. What a joy it has been to lead this group on this journey for God's glory this week. They have each taught me something personally in different ways, and I am thankful for God bringing every person in the team together as it worked perfectly for what needed to be accomplished this week. Thank you all for your prayer, and it will be my joy to see you tomorrow at the airport!

Wednesday August 11

Good Afternoon!

Today was another wonderful day serving the Lord in the DR! After morning devotions and breakfast, we headed out into the community to help put in a cement floor for a family. The families in the community here live in what we consider wooden sheds with a tin roof, most of them having dirt floors. It is a blessing to get a cement floor, because when it rains you are off the ground and out of the water. They were very joyful to see us working so hard, and it was a blessing to serve them and play with the crowd of children that we drew. We worked all morning long, and it took all 23 of us to form a line long enough to make a chain back and forth from the cement being mixed to the house, but bucket by bucket it was finally finished! It was very rewarding to see the simplest thing make a family so happy.

After some Dominican hamburgers and a game of keep-away in the pool during siesta, we then went back to the school to continue painting and working hard to finish the weight room and classroom buildings we have been assigned. Our team has been growing together more and more, and everyone is still joyful at the hard, yet satisfying work we are accomplishing.

Please continue to pray for our health, both spiritually and physically, as we are half way through our journey. Every participant has grown so much so far, so please pray especially that we not only remain open to what God wants to do through us, but also to what He wants to do in us this week.

Tuesday August 10

Good Evening!
Our third day in the Dominican has been another great day to see God's love at work through us both in word and action! After a hearty breakfast, we arrived at the school around 9:15 to continue working and painting on all of the projects that Cristian has for us! We continued to work on the weight room, different classrooms, and the front of two of the buildings. After a long day of painting and sanding, we broke for lunch and our new found love, siesta!

After lunch and our brief break, we headed back to the school to find over 100 kids waiting for us! We broke into three different teams, and rotated the kids through. There was a music and Bible story station, a face painting and craft station, and a recreation station. No one on our team speaks much Spanish, but the smiles on the kids' faces seem to say that they appreciated what we were doing for them. It was amazing to see the level of excitement as they were singing and dancing about God's love, and learning how Christ freed us from the bondage of sin!

God has been very gracious to us so far this trip. Rain has come at perfect times to cool us down, a breeze is always just around the corner when needed, and we have seen so much progress in our projects at the school that tomorrow we will be going out into the community to work on a house and do mission work there! Thank you all for praying for us. Please continue to pray that we would have the strength and be faithful to serve as God directs us to.

Monday August 9

Good morning everyone! We have had a wonderful time so far in the Dominican Republic getting familiar with the city and getting introduced to the people. After a travel day on Saturday, we arrived at the compound around 9:15. We would have been a little earlier, but the further you get away from Santo Domingo, the more exciting the roads become for driving. Our driver miscalculated a pothole in the road, but the guys worked hard and quickly to get us moving again. The locals were wonderful in helping us out (literally!), and already we began to feel the hospitality of the people in Los Alcarriozos. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a very generous portion of chicken, rice, vegetables, and of course "pop". After such an exciting trip, Cristian (the local missionary) gave us a great overview for the week, and after some time to talk about our day and what would come tomorrow we were off to bed.

Sunday started at 7AM. We were up for devotionals, and ready for breakfast at 8:30. We began walking to the church at 9:30, and were very excited to worship with the local church. It is always a joy to worship in a foreign country! The pastor is from Korea, and we joked that we could not understand his Spanish because of his Korean accent! During the service we got to see how Jesus is glorified in the Dominican culture. They like loud music and moving to it! In the little church with a portable sound system and no air conditioning, it seemed as if everyone from the worship team down to the children in the congregation were worshiping with total abandon. It was a privilege to then introduce our team, and Moriah Brillhart sang a beautiful Spanish rendition of "I'm Singing" by Kari Jobe.

After church, we walked back to the compound to eat another very good meal, followed by our first "siesta". We all determined afterward that we are going to introduce the idea of a siesta in America, because resting from 1 to 2 was wonderful! It was a good time to think about the service, and prepare our hearts for the walk that Cristian was going to take us on. Cristian's desire was to not only show us how the people live, but who they are. We walked up and down many different streets, and handed candy to the children who seemed to latch onto us for as long as we had candy to give. Even after, they followed us around the entire time, coming up and trying to talk and then running away. It was a humbling experience to see them and their families smiling and content in their tin homes with one room. Cristian showed us many of the homes and schools that God has miraculously provided money and teams to build, and also shared his vision of what he would like to do next. When asked "How many people have you seen come to Christ because of what's been done here?", he replied, "The exact number, I am not sure. But I know well over 10,000."

We then went to the school, and played baseball (which the local kids destroyed us in), basketball (which we kind of held our ground, but still lost terribly), volleyball (the only reason we did OK is because we are taller), and soccer (we made a noble effort!). It was a great introduction to the kids, and a great time of building relationships. Later this week, we will be coming back to share Christ with the very kids we were playing with. What an exciting time that will be!

As our day was winding down after dinner, we took some time to think about our expectations for coming and our perceptions now that we are here. The people here are very generous, very poor, and very much need Jesus. After a time of great conversation and evening devotions, we were off to sleep to rest for our first day of hard labor.

Today we are sanding down concrete walls in the soon-to-be only weight room around, painting, and cleaning up cement bricks and wood in order to paint. Cristian shared that there is a major drug problem in the area, and the work we are doing is providing people with an alternate place where they can hang out, work out, play sports, and learn about the Gospel. Thank you all for praying for us so far! Please continue to pray for our health, our servant attitudes, and that we would also not miss what God is doing in our own lives through this time of serving Him. More to be posted tomorrow!

For His Glory,
Tim Whitney

Middle Schoolers Making An Impact!

Impact is a great word to describe the Middle School Mission Trip!

Students are making an impact on the community in Cincinnati, OH by working with Origins Church. Today they are going out to represent the church in the community by doing children’s ministry through a block party. Each day they are being trained in church planting and how to make a positive impression in the short time that they are there that will hopefully lead to an eternal impact through the life of Origins Church in the days, weeks, and months ahead. The church plant has two locations that they meet in for worship each week. You can find out more about the church that they are working at by visiting http://www.originschurch.tv/Index.html

Students are being impacted as they are challenged each evening through worship services designed to inspire them for the work ahead and a lifetime of serving Christ. Each morning students are also spending personal time with Christ (pictured above). Things seem to be going very well with the team! Stay tuned… More to come!

Middle School Mission Trip Update!

Middle Missionaries had a great time worshipping yesterday with the church plant that they will be serving throughout the week. Afterward they had a blast hanging out at a Red's Baseball game. Here is a pic of them in front of the field. Continue to pray for them as their work begin today!

SLU 201 Comes to a close

Our students have had an intense 5 days in Washington, D.C. Whether touring the monuments, sitting in the church where George Washington worshiped, or visiting the Holocaust museum and speaking with survivors, students have been challenged to become strong and devoted leaders that live out their faith as our forefathers have. Only two more sessions this morning and we will be heading back home!

SLU 201 Day One!!!

We arrived at the Hilton Hotel ready to check in and get settled. We were surprised by a familiar face when we arrived. Who knew that our good old friend J-Mac was on SLU staff!

Also unexpectedly, we spent about 3 hours waiting to receive our room keys. However, we were treated to a personal tour of the Presidential hallway and elevator so it was totally worth the wait!!

After a delicious dinner we had our first two sessions. Then we were able to sit by the fire on the terrace and discuss the ways God has already spoken to each of us.

Pray for our girls to have open hearts as God presents challenges this week that will push them and stretch them to become better leaders for Him!

Final Camp Update!

God done amazing things in the lives of the students that went to camp. As a final update, I just wanted tolet you know that there were 20 students baptized at the Celebration Service, many of them having accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior earlier in the week. There are recap videos as well as other camp vids available at www.youtube.com/firstnorfolktsm Thanks to all of you that allowed your students to go. God will do BIG things with the impact He made this past week!

An Incredible Message with an Incredible Response

Tonight Jeremy Kingsley, our camp speaker, communicated the truth of the Gospel with great clarity and conviction. The Holy Spirit was moving in powerful ways and many students responded. Some responded by giving their lives to Jesus for the first time. Others rededicated their commitment to follow Christ with everything inside them. Still others were moved to respond in various ways that honor God. More than twenty students were counseled at the conclusion of the service with six students asking Jesus to be their Lord and Savior for the first time. Praise the Lord!

It has been a GREAT day here in Wake Forest. Please continue to pray that God will keep pouring out His presence just as He has done in every step of the way since we arrived. Your prayers are making the difference!

God Is Moving At Camp!

Greetings from Wake Forest University!

We have now come through our first two days of camp! Yesterday we arrived to beautiful Wake Forest University. Students moved into the dorms and then enjoyed "the best camp food ever". Afterward we jumped into our first worship service. The Matt Papa Band is leading worship this week. If you have never heard of Matt before you may google him to find a thin guy with a shock of red hair and a huge heart for worship. God's Spirit was evident as students worshipped God with incredible abandon. Seeing them sing out with everything inside of them was truly an awe-inspiring moment.

Jeremy Kinglsey opened up our week by driving home great biblical truths in ways that are relevant and applicable to students. One of the phrases that he has already seared into the minds of our students is that "you don't read the Bible to finish... you read the Bible to change". At the close of day one it was apparent that God has huge plans in store for our week together.

On Day Two, Camp breakfast came early at 7:30am in the caf before students had their quiet times using the devotions in their camp booklets. By 9am, we were back in full force worship as Jeremy talked about R.O.T.C = Rely, Obey, Trust, Cling. Students were challenged to Discover (our theme for the week) what is pleasing to God. Small groups came next. These are an essential component of our camp experience. Having so much truth poured into your brain and heart in such a short span of time can be overwhelming. Small groups are meant to connect the content of the messages to everyday life.

After another quick bite to eat, student reported for REC. Their first assignment... begin practicing for the LipSync competition. After last years incredible performances, this years acts are sure to be something fantastic! Then outdoor rec with team building games. There was some good competition going on between teams and the students had a blast.

Our evening session was phenomenal. Jeremy spoke of the Leper Jesus touched to heal (make clean). He likened it to being left out or leaving others out. Following his message, students poured through the auditorium asking forgiveness of each other and confessing their hardened hearts to one another. It was one of the moving moments in the time that I have been here as student pastor. One older brother ran to his younger sibling and asked forgiveness for the way that he had been treating him. Brokenness abounded and God was glorified.

For "Late Night", our middle schoolers visited the pool while our high school students played Capture the Flag. Then it was time for Guy/Girl Time. This is the time of the day when a couple of our adult leaders shares some insights about being a man of God to the men and a woman of God to the women. Susan and Jordan did an great job.

Please continue to pray for us. Tomorrow night, Jeremy will be sharing the Gospel and inviting any student who does not know Jesus to accept Him as Lord and Savior. Pray that any student that does not know Christ would be drawn to Him tomorrow night by the Spirit of God. Pray for changed lives and an awakening that will change the culture of students in Hampton Roads.

More to come tomorrow...

The Blog Is Up! SLU 101!

My apologies for not getting the blog up sooner! We had some technical difficulties. From here on out, this blog should be up and ready to go for the rest of the summer's events! Now to the important stuff...

We have had a blast here in Orlando at SLU 101!

Day One

Students arrived and were immediately thrust into intesive leadership development. Dr. Jay Strack (who has spoken to more teenagers that anyone else on the planet)challenged our students to consider themselves as leaders and begin taking basic steps in building their leadership journey. Having Dr. Jay here with us was especially nice, considering that none of our previous SLU 101 experiences have included a session with him.

Day Two

We started off the day in Shamu stadium and throughout the Seaworld theme park learning abotu the value of relationships. Using the amazing visual and experiential illustrations of killer whales and their trainers, sharks, and dolphins, our students learned the value of lasting and meaningful relationships as leaders.

We came back to the hotel and it was GAME ON as our students blitzed through the DISC personality profile (the single most proven personality profile used in fortune 500 companies today). Each student learned their giftedness and personal traits in a way thtat will allow them to maximize their strengths.

This was also dream session day... Just ask your student what their dream was when they get home. Some of them will blow your socks off. These students are awesome and here at SLU they are encouraged to chase their dreams no matter how big they are. Please encourage them as well... These are big dreams for a great generation!

Day Three

Your students sat through INTENSE Christian Worldview training with a great scholar, Dr. Bill Brown, prsident of Ceaderville University. They were challenged to consider how a leader may think Christianly in this day and age. They also heard from one of our nation's leading evangelists, Scott Dawson, on how leaders lead others to Jesus. Sessions were wrapped up with a little froggy that had a big meaning... I'll let your students explain.

This was also Universal Studios day. We cut out a little before 2pm and headed to the park. I want to tell you that for me personally, it was so much fun. Not because of roller coasters or shows at the park. It was because I got to spend time with your students and hear their hearts and dreams after an intense week. These are truly amazing students that you as parents should be overwhelmingly proud of. Thanks for sending them here!

Also, don't forget to ask them about how I was ice cream ambushed.... :-)

Today

We are coming home this afternoon, but not before we are scheduled to meeting with the corporate leadership of Chick-fil-A, the VP of Orlando Magic basketball, and hear from the VP of Student Leadership... Pray for traveling mercies and our group would finish this expereince strong! See you all at 7:30pm this evening!
